American names Simpkins as new head coach

American College named George Mason assistant Duane Simpkins because the Eagles new head coach Saturday.

Simpkins replaces Mike Brennan, who went 125-166 over 10 seasons and was let go earlier this week.

Simpkins brings deep ties to the realm from his time as an assistant, a highschool coach and a star participant at Maryland.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Duane Simpkins, a confirmed expertise and revered coach into our AU Athletics household,” stated Billy Walker, director of athletics and recreation, in a press release. “His ardour for positively shaping the lives of younger student-athletes was evident throughout the choice course of. His shut ties to the realm as a coach and participant, together with an incredible recruiting acumen and unbending character, make him a really perfect selection to guide our program. Duane is actually a changemaker.”

Simpkins spent the previous eight years at George Mason and helped lure high expertise to the boys’s basketball program underneath each Kim English and former coach Dave Paulsen. He served three seasons at UNC Greensboro previous to becoming a member of Mason, a stint that included roles as each assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

He broke into faculty as Towson’s coordinator of basketball operations underneath Pat Skerry.

Simpkins’ native ties embody stints as the top highschool coach at St. Albans in Washington D.C. from 2007 to 2011. Previous to that, he was at Sidwell Buddies College from 2005 to 2007.

Simpkins was a McDonald’s All American on the fabled DeMatha Catholic Excessive College underneath Corridor of Fame coach Morgan Wootten. He later starred at Maryland, the place he was a three-year starter and workforce captain underneath Gary Williams.

American went 17-15 general this season, going 7-11 within the Patriot League. The Eagles haven’t reached the NCAA event since 2014, Brennan’s first season.
